-hören verbs

You probably know already, that hören is to hear. But there are other variations of hören that are used often and that don't have to do with sounds. Here's a list.

hören - to hear
zuhören - to listen (also herhören/hinhören - more broadly. z.B. Bitte alle mal herhören, to a crowd)
mit etw. aufhören - to quit something
zu etw./jmdm gehören - to belong to someone or something
sich umhören - to ask around
abhören - to monitor, to wiretap
erhören - to answer (a plea)
verhören - to interrogate (in official way)
sich verhören - to mishear

to prepare

leo.org is a godsend and a curse. I typed in "prepare" and got 20 potential verbs. Luckily my German friend helped create some structure around these.

I am preparing a talk, and she recommends that enwerfen (to design), erarbeiten, or erstellen all work, as does aufarbeiten. fertigmachen also works if I will do it to completion. aufbereiten is when you already have something that you wish to improve. And perhaps most important, the false friend präparieren is only for preparing bodies for studying anatomy. "präp" courses would not help you ace your SAT exams. anfertigen is for building objects from other parts (like building tables, or writing a draft), anmachen for lighting a candle, herrichten for making something look nicer. rüsten is to be well prepared, as in "ich bin gerüstet dafür."
